Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter 2 Inhibitors
Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2 inhibitors) are indicated in the treatment of type II diabetes and work by decreasing the reabsorption of glucose in the renal tubules. More glucose then escapes through the urinary system. Yeast infections of the GU tract and urinary tract infections are more probable with these medications due to the increased levels of glucose in the urine.
Class Drugs
Canagliflozin
Dapagliflozin
Empagliflozin
Class Mechanism of Action
Inhibits sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) in renal tubular lumen
Decreases reabsorption of glucose in renal tubules, which results in urinary excretion of glucose
Reabsorption of sodium also inhibited resulting in osmotic diuresis
Class Applications
Type II Diabetes Mellitus
Class Adverse Effects
Genital mycotic infections (vulvovaginitis, etc.)
Urinary tract infections
Urinary frequency
Hypotension
