Amylin Analogs
Pramlintide is an amylin analog. Amylin is secreted by the pancreas and works with insulin to reduce blood sugar levels. Amylin slows gastric emptying, reduces appetite and decreases glucagon secretion. Care must be taken when administering pramlintide as hypoglycemia can occur, which can be profound. Because amylin slows gastric emptying, diabetic gastroparesis can be exacerbated.
