Calcitonin
Calcitonin is a medication that is used in the treatment of osteoporosis, Paget's disease, and hypercalcemia. Calcitonin works by reducing the number and activity of osteoclasts, which reduces bone resorption. Reduction of number and function of osteoclasts improves bone density and reduces serum calcium levels. In addition, calcitonin reduces resorption of calcium in the renal tubules, which also reduces serum calcium levels. Calcitonin can cause an increased risk of malignancy.
