Integrase Inhibitors
Integrase inhibitors are used to treat HIV and work by binding to metal ions on the integrase enzyme of HIV, which inhibits HIV from inserting proviral DNA into the host DNA. Resistance can develop from mutation of the integrase gene. Care must be taken to not administer with other ionized foods or medications, which would lower bioavailability.
Class Drugs
Dolutegravir
Elvitegravir
Raltegravir
Class Mechanism of Action
Binds to metal ions on integrase enzyme of HIV, rendering HIV ineffective at insertion of proviral DNA into the host DNA
Class Applications
HIV
Class Adverse Effects
Must be given separate from other cations/antacids or bioavailability will decrease
Resistance
- Mutation of integrase gene
