Urate-lowering Drugs
Elevated levels of uric acid can precipitate gout. Gout is a condition in which uric acid crystals are deposited into joints. Uric acid crystals result in painful, swollen, and erythematous joints. Prevention of gout attacks is accomplished by lowering uric acid levels. Xanthine oxidase inhibitors (allopurinol and febuxostat) reduce uric acid levels by inhibiting the production of uric acid. Probenecid works by increasing renal clearance of uric acid and pegloticase is an enzyme that converts uric acid to allantoin.
