Quinupristin/Dalfopristin
Quinupristin and dalfopristin are combination antibiotics that bind to separate areas on the 50s ribosome subunit, which inhibit protein synthesis. These medications are used to treat VRE that is resistant to other medications. Quinupristin and dalfopristin are bactericidal. Resistance to these medications occurs from enzymatic inactivation and efflux pumps. Adverse effects include venous irritation, arthralgias, and hyperbilirubinemia.
